Managing Acute Pain with Nerve Blocks: A Guide of Patients

by Andre Boezaart (Author),‎

The purpose of this booklet is to provide patients with information about regional anesthesia. Designed to answer a patient’s most likely questions, its secondary purpose is to allow more informed dialogs between patients, surgeons and anesthesiologists. With the advent of increased outpatient surgery, peformed in minimally invasive manner, the need for large doses of potent and potentially dangerous drugs is drawing to a close. Many surgeons and anesthesiologists are relying on single-injection and continuous nerve blocks to manage surgical and other acute pain. In this volume, the reader can search for a type of surgery from the color-coded Table of Contents and read about the nerve blocks likely to be offered during the procedure and for postoperative pain. Patients are encouraged to discuss these regional anesthesia procedures with their health care providers. All the blocks described in this booklet can be viewed on www.RAEducation.com, which is free for patients.

High Yield Nerve Blocks Vol 1:: The Cervical Paravertebral Block

by Andre Boezaart (Author),‎ Donald Bohannon (Author),‎ Mary Bryson (Illustrator)

This Kindle version of this volume contains both the applied anatomy and detailed technique necessary to perform the cervical paravertebral block. For the authors, the continuous (and single-injection) cervical paravertebral block has totally replaced the continuous interscalene block. After performing several thousand interscalene blocks, inferior results and a relatively high rate of complications prompted the change. The cervical paravertebral block is a selective, mostly sensory block that the authors have been providing for shoulder, and to a lesser extent, elbow and wrist, surgery for the past quarter century dating back to its first description by Boezaart in 1992. With over 20,000 performances, the authors are confident that, if the macro, micro and sonoanatomy is thoroughly understood, this block offers an exceedingly high yield for pain relief.

Anestesia ortopédica, atlas de bloqueos nerviosos periféricos (Spanish Edition) (Spanish)2011 Spanish Edition

by Andre Boezaart (Author), Amolca (Editor)

more

Andre P Boezaart. Primer of Regional Anesthesia Anatomy:: Macro-, Micro- and Sonoanatomy. 2nd Edition. Paperback – April 24, 2017

by Andre P. Boezaart (Author), Mary K. Bryson (Illustrator), Paul E. Bigeilsen(Contributor), Donald S. Bohannan (Contributor), David A. Edwards (Contributor), Barys V. Ihnatsenka (Contributor), Linda Le-Wendling (Contributor), Yury Zasimovich (Contributor)

Although it is not the purpose of this textbook to teach Regional Anesthesia (RA) techniques per se, experienced practitioners of RA and Acute Pain Medicine (APM) have long realized that if they truly understand the macro-, micro-, sono- and functional anatomy of a nerve or nerve plexus, they already know how to do the blocks of that nerve or plexus. To make this essential knowledge readily available in one concise and easy to study resource, Professor Boezaart and his colleagues have compiled this textbook for anyone who needs a deeper understanding of the complexities of the nervous system anatomy as it applies to RA and APM. With over 4 decades of personal experience researching, practicing and teaching these subjects, and over 150 years of combined experience of the co-authors, they are well qualified to bring this resource to the perpetual student.

more

This 2nd Edition of “The Primer” is an extension of the very successful and popular 1st Edition, which did not include micro- and sonoanatomy. It comprises minimal text and maximal visual material, including photographs and the beautiful award winning illustrations of Mary Bryson. It is available as a single comprehensive book, or, alternatively, as 3 separate volumes for the practitioner who desires to study only a particular section of the anatomy. Volume 1 deals with the upper extremity, Volume 2 with the lower extremity and Volume 3 with the trunk and abdominal sympathetic ganglia. The book is so designed that viewing the figures, reading their legends, and watching the dynamic sonoanatomy and functional anatomy videos online, should give practitioners and students a more than adequate working knowledge to effectively perform most, if not all, nerve blocks. And certainly, enough knowledge to answer any ABA or other examination questions on RA and APM anatomy. This primer should be regarded as the absolute minimum anatomical knowledge required for proficiency in RA. Clicking on, or copying any URL in these pages into a browser, will take the reader to further educational material that was created as part of this textbook for those interested in a deeper study of the subject.

The Anatomical Foundations of Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Kindle Edition

by André P. Boezaart (Editor)

Students and practitioners of regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine often ask how they can be consistently as successful with their blocks as the true experts are. Too often do scholars focus on learning techniques of RA and APM from experts, and then get lost in a myriad of bad results that include primary or secondary block failures.

more

The answer to this question is that every discipline of medicine has a unique fundamental truth, and true understanding this fundamental truth is essential for success. If we truly understand that the fundamental truth of Critical Care Medicine, for example, is the management and maintenance of physiological barriers. Similarly, the fundamental truth of anesthesia is the management of physiological reflexes. The fundamental truth of regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine is, according to the timeless wisdom of Alon Winnie, the in depth knowledge and true understanding of anatomy. If we fully understand where nerves live (macroanatomy), we completely understand what the nerves live in – the membranes and barriers that surround them (microanatomy) and we know how to find these nerves (sono- and functional anatomy)

we can use any technique to do any nerve block and we will be successful.

With this fundamental understanding, we can now better appreciate, on an anatomical basis, why blocks sometimes fail; where the “sweet spot” of a nerve is and how to find it; why epidural blocks are segmental while subarachnoid blocks are not; why older patients are less prone to postdural puncture headache, and many more issues of regional anesthesia and pain medicine.

The basic working philosophy and design of this textbook is that the reader can obtain a good practical working knowledge of the macro-, micro-, sono-, and functional anatomy required for regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine simply by viewing the figures and movies and reading the legends to the figures. If more in depth information is needed, the extensive text and reference list would adequately compliment this knowledge.

Regional Anesthesia; Its Technic and Clinical Application Paperback – August 31, 2012

by Gaston Labat (Author)

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Ultrasonographic guidance for regional anaesthetic blocks is an innovative technique that allows for the direct visualization of nerves, adjacent structures and the position of the needle, as well as for the precise observation of the spread of local anaesthetic. The advantages of the technique allow for the exact administration of moderate volumes of local anaesthetic, reducing the risk of complications.

more

Written by a physician with 16 years’ experience in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia, this second edition of the well-received practical handbook provides a concise summary of the basics of ultrasound technology and the most recent techniques in the use of ultrasound to guide peripheral nerve blocks, focusing specifically on ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block techniques.

All chapters have been carefully revised to provide the most recent knowledge in the topic of ultrasound in regional anaesthesia. A strong focus has still been attached on anatomical descriptions and subsequent practical implementations. Paediatric applications are now included in this new edition to aid paediatric anaesthesiologists, as well as the incorporation of neuraxial techniques to complete the entire topic. With illustrated colour images throughout, this book is highly relevant to anaesthesiologists and pain specialists with an interest in regional anaesthesia.

Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic: Balancing Societal and Individual Benefits and Risks of Prescription Opioid Use (Related Harms)

by Engineering, and Medicine National Academies of Sciences (Author), Health and Medicine Division (Author), Board on Health Sciences Policy (Author), Committee on Pain Management and Regulatory Strategies to Address Prescription Opioid Abuse (Author), Jonathan K. Phillips (Editor), Morgan A. Ford (Editor), Richard J. Bonnie (Editor)

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA’s development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.
